Grammy-winning singer Ciara and her husband and professional football player Russel Wilson have donated $1.75 million to fund a Seattle charter school.
Wilson and Ciara contributed the money via their Why Not You Foundation to rebrand an existing charter school known as Cascade Midway Academy.
The public high school will open in 2021 under the name Why Not You Academy.
“We’ve always held the belief that life’s successes start with a good education, but recognize that access isn’t always created equally for all,” the couple said in a statement.
They added, “The Why Not You Foundation was created with the concept of empowering youth to lead with a why not you attitude and that’s why it was important for our foundation… to help open doors for kids from less fortunate backgrounds.”
The couple expects this to be the first of many Why Not You Academy schools across the country.
