Rod Stewart’s wife Penny Lancaster, 50, said her 76-year-old rockstar husband was forced to work more in his younger years, as a manager was pocketing a lot of his money. The model said he regretted not being around as much as he’d like to have been for his children, but said they are all a blended family now.

The Maggie May hitmaker has eight children in total.

He shares 28-year-old daughter Renee and son Liam, 26, with his ex-wife Rachel Hunter, Kimberly and Sean with first wife Alana, daughters Ruby and Sarah from past relationships and sons Alastair, 12, and Aiden, 10, with wife Penny.

Rod tied the knot with his third wife, who is 26 years his junior, in 2007.

Speaking on ITV show Loose Women today, the mother-of-two was asked if she worried about Rod being an older parent to her sons.

The former model insisted age was just a number and said it depended on the person’s capability.

She said: “My rockstar has got the fitness of a 35-year-old and he’s not retired. He’s still whizzing around the world and can’t wait to get back on tour next year.

“So, I don’t consider him in that older category and whether it’s better or not to have an older dad, it’s really been amazing for my boys because of his traditional values and morals that he’s instilled.

“The boys have naturally picked up the manners of opening the door and being polite and gracious and having respect for elders, those kind of old fashioned values.

“And showing the boys when he’s wrong, he apologises, I think the younger generation they sort of skip over some of those things.”

She went on to say Rod now spends a lot more quality time at home now than he did at the height of his fame.

When asked if she thinks her spouse is better as an older dad than he was a younger one, she added: “I think so.

“I think he would admit that, I think a lot of his children will agree to that, he’s had the time to reflect and learn from lessons from the past.”

Penny added Rod was “under a lot of pressure” when his oldest children were younger because “his manager at the time took all his money”.

“He had to work a lot,” she added.

“He does have regrets not being there for his older ones but he’s certainly made up for it, we are all one big family now!”

The mother-of-two went on to say she doesn’t fear Rod may not be around for long for their children, due to his age.

“Rod isn’t your average man of his age, his fitness and everything is like someone of half is age,” she continued.

The Loose Women star added her sibling in-law’s had lived until over 90 years old and believes he’ll do the same.

“Sadly there’s so many young couples and the man isn’t present in their children’s lives, so we’re doing good,” she concluded.

Loose Women airs weekdays from 12.30pm on ITV.
