Alternative therapies Prince Harry and Meghan have used to heal their family including reiki and tapping

Since moving stateside with his growing family, Prince Harry has been open about using alternative therapy to boost his mental wellbeing.

While the 36 year old Duke takes on ‘tapping’ methods and EMDR to tackle his PTSD diagnosis, his wife Meghan is already introducing their two year old son to self-healing.

A source close to the couple revealed she gives Archie, along with herself and their dogs (Pula and Guy), reiki therapy to help them all “feel balanced and relaxed”.

So what exactly is involved when Meghan administers the therapy and how will it help the Sussex family heal?

Liz Underwood, a reiki practitioner, explains, “Reiki is a Japanese form of ‘hands-on’ therapy, using healing energy (found in and around us) to ease stress, promote relaxation and provide pain relief. It’s completely safe and natural, balancing our life force energy called Ki. When our Ki is low, we’re out of balance physically, mentally and emotionally – this leads to disease.


“To be a reiki practitioner like Meghan, you need to be open-minded and learn the different symbols (like power and harmony) used in healing sessions. I visualise these symbols imprinted into my hands and repeat their names to help that specific energy flow from myself to the client.

“Reiki will work on anyone, at any age, if you’re open to receiving it. You need a silent room and a massage table or comfy chair. A clear mind, an open heart, love and compassion is required to channel healing. The experience is simple and very soothing for the giver and receiver.

“During a session, my hands tingle as I channel energy through them, held close to – but not touching – the person’s body. Some clients can sense that my hands are hot.

"I hover my hands in various positions on their body from head to shoulders all the way down to the feet. I’ve also placed my hands directly on or near a site of pain or discomfort.

“Reiki works to balance our different energy centres in and around the body – they’re known as chakras, meridians, nadis and the aura.

“So when you receive reiki, you might see colours, lights and images, or feel warmth, tingling and a sense of relaxation washing over you. It releases the ‘bad energy’ or toxins and can make you feel a bit headachy and nauseous, but it normally passes after rest and water to flush it all away.

“It’s not uncommon to practise reiki on children and pets. It will help Archie calm down, feel relaxed and even improve his sleep. It could deepen the bond between Meghan and her dogs, reduce any stress and even help with separation anxiety.”

When I perform reiki, I say the following blessing:

“Just for today I will not worry.

I will not be angry.

I will do my work honestly.

I will give thanks for my many blessings.

I will be kind to my neighbour and all

living things.”

Tapping

Also known as EFT or Emotional Freedom Technique, Harry is likely to be using this to ease anxiety, emotional and physical pain by tapping on pressure points around his body.

It’s believed that Meghan introduced Harry to tapping as a form of ancestral healing, which helps to release negative patterns imprinted on DNA from past generations.

EFT uses fingertip tapping to apply pressure to hot spots (where energy flows through), rebalancing the body’s energy and sending signals to the brain to relieve the stress a traumatic experience might have caused.

EMDR

Eye Movement Desensitisation Reprogramming is recommended by the NHS to help PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) sufferers, like Harry, address unpleasant memories and store them in a different place in the brain.

Harry uses the therapy to treat the anxiety he’s carried since his mother’s passing in 1997. He’ll be asked to recall a traumatic event while following eye movements instructed by his therapist.

Physically tapping on the body has a slightly different effect than EFT, working to replace the traumatic memory with a new one and offer a sensation of safety – very clever!

Keep calm

Ahead of her royal wedding, Meghan kept anxiety at bay with daily yoga sessions. She also went jogging in the park each day and started every morning with meditation. A glass of red wine and some ‘mindless’ TV was her trick to unwinding in the evenings!

Stay nourished

While a hearty fry up tempts our hungry tummies, Meghan believes it’s vital to start the day on a healthy note. She serves up an açaí bowl packed with vitamins and nutrients from banana, almond milk and frozen berries, a drizzle of manuka honey and a sprinkle of coconut flakes.

Travel with tea tree oil

In an interview, Meghan revealed, “The one thing that I cannot live without when I’m travelling is a small container of tea tree oil. It’s not the most glamorous thing, but if you get a cut, a mosquito bite, a small breakout, no matter what it is, it’s my little cure-all.”

Take social media breaks

It’s easy to get swept up seeking validation from social media. The ‘likes’ may feel great but might trigger anxiety. Meghan told the press that it’s “freeing” not to be on social media anymore, adding, “Young people find it so difficult. You see photos on social media and you don’t know whether she’s born with it or maybe it’s a filter.”

Show yourself a little love

Self-love is a priority for the Duchess, who wrote on The Tig, “You need to know that you’re enough. That 5lbs lost won’t make you happier, more make-up won’t make you prettier. The now iconic saying from Jerry Maguire – ‘you complete me’ – frankly, isn’t true. You are complete with or without a partner. You are enough just as you are.”
