Entrepreneur Michelle Mone talks family, weight loss and the importance of business

Not a lot of people know this but I’m very good at… the splits. I’m actually really flexible and my friends often ask me to do the splits at parties. I also think I’m really good at karaoke, but then I guess everyone does after a few G&Ts.

My best friend is… I’m fortunate enough to have loads of really good friends. But my best friend has got to be Doug, my husband-to-be. We were meant to get married at the start of May, but obviously we’ve had to postpone.

My nickname is… Shelly. But most of the time people just call me Michelle.

The bravest thing I’ve ever done is… take part in a show that meant I had to camp in the North Pole. That was quite something. We even climbed an ice mountain.

My favourite TV show is… Killing Eve. Doug and I don’t get to watch loads of TV because we’re always travelling, but we can watch that back-to-back.

My perfect evening is… going out for dinner with friends and then having a little dance and a sing-song. I love having fun with my friends and family.

My first kiss was… horrible. I was 13, 5ft 9ins and I just remember the guy being really short and having to stand on phone books in order to reach me.

The best thing my parents taught me was… to treat people how you’d want to be treated. Even if you’re massively successful with loads of money, it’s never OK to look down on someone or treat them badly.

My biggest regret is… ruining 10 to 15 years of my life being unhappy with my body. I’m in the best shape I’ve ever been in now and I feel amazing for it – just wish I’d sorted it all out sooner.

I’d like to say sorry to…my family. Growing a global business with three young children is no mean feat and there are only so many hours in the day. I was so busy and couldn’t spend as much time with them as I’d have liked.

The one thing I’d change about myself is… my tendency to over worry about others. My mum has always told me I need to relax more.

The last time I cried was… when my mum had her breast cancer op. She was terrified before she went in and I had to be really stern with her. It helped but, of course, I balled my eyes out in the lift once she was through the doors.

The first record I ever bought was… Madonna, Like A Virgin. I’d always sing into a hairbrush, pretending to be her.

It’s not good for my image but I like… a night at the casino. Gambling is never a good idea, but when you’re winning there’s nothing like it.

My greatest weakness is… Häagen Dazs ice cream – the pralines and cream one. It’s banned from the house because I will just eat the whole tub.

If I could pass any law, I’d… make it compulsory for kids to take some kind of business course. No matter what you want to do, the skills you learn in business and an entrepreneurial spirit can help propel you further.

I drive… a Bentley.

The shop I can’t walk past is… Selfridges online. Doug and I are obsessed with sending our friends surprise care packages from there during lockdown. I love going through the site and picking out everything I think they’ll love.

The most expensive thing I’ve ever splashed out on is… a car that Doug really wanted, but I hate showing off, so I’m not going to say which one. It doesn’t have to be expensive to make an impact.

My perfect Sunday is… a lazy morning with Doug – that’s pure magic. We love watching Saturday Kitchen highlights in bed. Then going for a nice long walk and cooking up a classic Sunday roast afterwards.

My favourite place in Britain is… the Kyles of Bute. There’s no place like it in the world.

My last holiday was… just before lockdown. I took Doug to New York for the weekend and we went to see Hall and Oates for his birthday.

I’m currently reading… nothing at the moment because I’m so busy. But I’m really into learning about health and fitness and The China Study [a book about diet and disease] was amazing.

The best day of my life was… when my mum told us she’d been given the all clear.

If I had an hour left on Earth, I’d… spend it with Doug, my children and my mum and dad. We’d just have a huge party I think.
