With the sun creeping back out and British summer well underway, many will be searching for ways to stay cool at night.
And now an expert has revealed why it can be so difficult to get to sleep in the heat – as well as her nine tips on how to keep your bedroom a pleasant temperature.
Mary Love, Head of Product and Innovation at Simba, told FEMAIL having a core temperature that is too high will make it difficult for your brain to tell if you are awake or asleep, negatively impacting the quality of your slumber.
Therefore, it is vital to create a cool and relaxing environment before hitting the hay.
Meanwhile she also revealed her nine tips for a guaranteed peaceful night’s sleep – including shutting the windows…

1. Make your own air con
Air-con units in homes across England are hard to come by… not to mention expensive. So why not create your own?
Pour some ice into a shallow baking tray, pan or bowl and place it in front of a high-quality fan.
As the ice begins to melt, the breeze will pick up the moisture and disperse a cooling mist across the room.
This will make a huge difference on those stuffy nights.
2. Keep your windows (and curtains) closed
If there’s a nice breeze, open your windows to allow fresh air to circulate your room.
However, if it seems hotter outside than inside, I’d recommend keeping your windows shut – you don’t want the stuffy air to heat up your room.
Instead of opening your curtains in the morning, keep them closed throughout the day to block the sunlight from heating up your room.
You can open them again when the sun sets, and it isn’t shining brightly through the window.
3. Wear cotton
What you wear in bed has a huge effect on how well you sleep.
Loose fitting, well-ventilated cotton pyjamas are the best option. Avoid synthetic materials that will cling to you at night.
Cotton has moisture absorbing properties that will help keep sweat from your body and, ultimately, allow for an improved level of comfort.
4. Ice packs at the ready
Ice packs will cool your body temperature in an instant. When we find ourselves awake, sweating in the middle of the night or tossing and turning to get comfortable, we often become warmer as we worry about not getting enough sleep.
This is the time to turn to your ice packs. Place them on your wrists or forehead for a few minutes and relax as the temperature quickly begins to drop.
No ice packs? Use a flannel or cut up an old towel instead.
5. Flip your pillow
Everyone loves that feeling of flipping your pillow over to the cool side. When the heat is unbearable, don’t forget to flip over and enjoy that momentary respite from the heat.
6. Invest in a fan
With fans, you get what you pay for. If you don’t mind that constant hum sound, head down to your local shop and pick up a cheap one.
But, if you want to invest more money, they may keep you cooler this month – and in the final weeks of summer to come.
7. Take a cool shower before bed
Taking a refreshing, cool shower before bedtime can help lower your body temperature and make it easier to fall asleep.
Avoid hot showers as they will make you feel… well… hot!
8. Stay hydrated
An obvious tip for hot weather is to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the day.
We lose water through sweating, so keeping the level of fluids up is essential. It’s recommended to consume three litres, which will also assist come bedtime.
9. Avoid using electronics before bed
As hard as it may be, it’s time to stop scrolling through TikTok in bed. Using your phone – especially while on charge – can generate heat and make you feel hotter.
Likewise, watching a movie on a laptop will have the same effect.
