Debenhams looks likely to close as JD Sports has pulled out of acquiring parent company Arcadia. A 70 percent off sale has been launched drawing enormous queues.

Britons took to Twitter to highlight the queues outside stores. One wrote: “Queue now.. as Debenhams about to open “it’s very sad about people’s jobs. I’m hoping for some bargains” sums up the general view from the queue..”

Another claimed there were three queues outside of Debenhams in the Telford Centre.

They wrote: “Did nobody tell them there might be people up early!”

Another wrote: “Queues outside Debenhams in Basingstoke this morning, following the news the chain is set to close its stores. It appears people are in the market for a bargain or two.”

Debenhams’ website crashed this morning as so many people attempted to access the sales.

Those attempting to access the Debenhams website will be asked to wait in a virtual queue.

A notice on the site reads: “Sorry for the wait, we are currently using a virtual queue due to exceptional demand. We will get you onto the site as soon as possible.

“Thank you for your patience.”
