In May 2020, the National Portrait Gallery — along with the Duchess of Cambridge — asked the public to send in photographs illustrating their pandemic experience.
Out of 31,000 submissions, 100 were chosen for this poignant collection.
It captures couples giving each other wonky hair-cuts, doctors and nurses with goggle lines etched on their skin and the children of key workers chalking rainbows (pictured) in support of the NHS. As poet and judge Lemn Sissay writes in the foreword, this moving book is ‘a celebration of the human spirit in adversity’.
