Unilever launches 'grab and go' refill scheme for cleaning and toiletries

Making your favourite products more eco-friendly is about to get easier.

Unilever, the producer of lots of big name brands, is launching ‘grab and go’ refills for Persil, Radox, Simple and Alberto Balsam bottles.

The company had successfully trialled a refill station in Asda’s sustainability store in Leeds last year.

Uptake exceeded expectations with weekly purchases of Persil from the refill zone reaching a third higher than the equivalent single

Now it plans to launch more of the stations, and to make it quicker, stores will offer pre-filled refillable bottles, which can be brought back and swapped for another full one.

It means no queuing or waiting to use the machine.

The products available in refillable packaging include:

  • Persil Non-Bio
  • Radox Shower Gel Eucalyptus
  • Radox Shower Gel Lemongrass
  • Radox Shower Cream Chamomile
  • Radox Feel Calm with Camomile
  • Radox Feel Refreshed Eucalyptus
  • Radox Feel Revived Lemongrass
  • Simple Hand Wash
  • Alberto Balsam Shampoo & Conditioner

Shoppers can pick up a pre-filled stainless-steel bottle in the same aisle as the rest of the cleaning or toiletry products, and return it in-store once finished, where they are collected to be cleaned and re-filled.

New refill stations will be added at five Asda stores in Middleton in Leeds, Rugby, Toryglen in Glasgow, York and Milton Keynes, and two at Co-op stores in Huddersfield and York.

On the expansion of Unilever’s refill trials, Sebastian Munden, Unilever UK & Ireland General Manager and Executive Vice-President, said: ‘To tackle plastic pollution with the speed and urgency needed, we are committed to creating scalable solutions which make it as easy as possible for people to make sustainable choices.

‘We believe refills could be a gamechanger in our ambitions to halve our use of virgin plastic by 2025, however unlocking the full potential of the reuse economy would require a significant shift in how people shop.

‘Using our well-known and trusted brands and working closely with retailers, we are testing different refill models on a large scale in order to continue to build our understanding of how to bring about a significant change most effectively.’
