A woman was completely stunned after her husband painted their home in rainbow stripes – without telling her.
Karen Goldsmith, 59, couldn’t believe it when Mike, her husband of 40 years, revamped their home near Pennycross, Plymouth, with multi-coloured paint.
Karen went away to visit her daughter and grandson in London, and while she was away, Mike got to walk.
Inspired by a recent holiday to Portugal, Mike decided to paint his family home in the vivid colours, and he took a few days off work so he could complete the job and surprise his wife.
‘We went to Portugal on holiday and he was inspired by the harbour, places were decorated like this,’ says Karen.
‘He has wanted to do it since, but I wouldn’t let him. Then, I went to London for a few days with my daughter and grandson.
‘We got back, and, well… Oh my god. My daughter said the same, and told me to avert my eyes.’
Luckily, the rainbow design has grown on Karen, and now she likes it almost as much as Mike does.
‘But the more I see it, the more I like it,’ she says. ‘It’ll be left like this now.’
And Karen says she wasn’t that surprised by Mike’s bold design. She says he is always coming up with wacky ideas.
‘He’s always been a bit like that,’ she explains.
‘You never know what you’re going to get.’
Mike’s inspiration behind the design is actually really sweet. He says the bright colours represent their family members – with the orange for their grandson and pink for their granddaughter.
Karen also admitted that the light blue is her favourite.
The home has been rainbow-coloured for around two years now, and has certainly cheered up neighbours and passers-by on gloomy lockdown days.
Karen told the Plymouth Herald: ‘You get a few reactions, people taking pictures.
‘It’s nice, some people even knock to ask what made us do it. If taxi drivers pull up, they’ll take a picture of it.
‘The neighbours thought, first of all, that he was joking.
‘They thought he showed them the colour palette to choose one, and he said, “no, all of them.”
‘Then they egged him on a bit. Most of them around here say it cheers them up.
‘It’s lovely area and it’s quiet. We have really good neighbours, we’re very lucky.’
The paint job goes beyond the exterior walls of the terrace house, too. Mike painted the fence and even the garden ornaments so they would all match the vibrant theme.
Maybe we should all consider adding a little more colour to our lives.
