Emmerdale fans were left distraught when the actor who plays Robert Sugden (Ryan Hawley) announced he was leaving the ITV soap to embark on other opportunities. His exit storyline saw him delivered a guilty verdict for murdering Lee Posner (Kris Mochrie) and he was sentenced to live in prison. Following his heartbreaking goodbye to husband Aaron Dingle (Danny Miller) where he was then transferred to a prison on the Isle of Wight, Robert hasn’t been mentioned apart from a few letters he sent to Aaron and sister Victoria Sugden (Isabel Hodgins). And in upcoming scenes, it seems Robert has been in touch, but what does he want?
Over a year ago, during the dreaded Big Night Out in Hotton which changed several village residents lives forever, Victoria was raped by Lee.
She then found out she was pregnant and despite the awful circumstances in which her baby was conceived, she decided to keep it and raise it herself.
But her pregnancy wasn’t easy; Lee’s mother soon found out and made Victoria’s life extremely difficult.
To add to this, Lee refused to leave Victoria alone unless she paid him off, and with the help of Aaron and Robert, they managed to gather enough cash.
However, in one fateful scene, Lee wound up Robert to the point of blind rage and during their altercation, he grabbed a shovel and hit Lee round the head.

After being rushed to hospital, it was announced Lee was in a coma, and following several worrying weeks he finally woke up, only to suffer a bleed on the brain which caused his death.
Emmerdale fans will remember Aaron and Robert panic packing in a bid to flee, but it wasn’t long before the police arrived and carted Robert off in handcuffs.
Fast forward to his trial and he pleaded guilty to his crimes and was sentenced to life.
Aaron promised he would stick by Robert, after everything they had been through he was determined to make their marriage work.
But Robert had other plans, he said goodbye to Aaron cryptically during a prison visit and then asked to be transferred.
He told Victoria of his plans in a letter and then issued Aaron with divorce papers.
Nothing has been mentioned about Robert this year, but according to official soap spoilers, he will be brought into conversation once more.
Emmerdale is airing a series of lockdown episodes next week which will see a select few characters experiencing everyday life of the current coronavirus.
Aaron, who currently has Cain Dingle (Jeff Hordley) living with him at Mill Cottage will be seen adjusting to life.
And Aaron sees this as the perfect opportunity to find out what Cain has been up to recently – after all, viewers will remember Aaron questioning Cain’s shady behaviour following a meet up with DI Malone (Mark Womack).

But, Cain is adamant he won’t be opening up about his feelings.
Scenes will show Cain intercept a letter addressed to Aaron with a prison stamp on it, concerned he will slip back into a dark place like the last time Robert got in touch, he decides to hide the letter.
As with everything, the truth eventually comes out and with these two it’s when they get drunk with one another.
Understandably, Aaron in furious – but what does the letter say?
Perhaps it is just an update about his divorce, nevertheless, he will surely head to Victoria’s to find out whether she too has received a letter.
- Emmerdale spoilers: Chas Dingle and Paddy won’t get married?
Previously, the contents of Robert’s letters have differentiated depending on who the receiver was.
Therefore, it could be possible Robert speaks more about his prison life to Victoria than to Aaron.
Could he be informing his sister he is moving prisons – perhaps one closer to Emmerdale and suggests a visit?
Emmerdale airs Monday, Wednesday and Fridays at 7pm on ITV.
