The Crown will have just six seasons, with the penultimate series coming out on Wednesday, November 9, on Netflix. The period drama will explore what happened to the Royal Family in the 1990s, including the only daughter of Queen Elizabeth II. Here’s everything there is to know about the actress taking over as Princess Anne.

Who plays Princess Anne in The Crown season 5?

In the first two series of The Crown, child actress Lyla Barrett-Rye was behind Princess Anne before Erin Doherty took over the role for series three and four.

Apart from the Netflix series, she has been in the BBC adaptation of Les Miserables, Intelligent Design, Call the Midwife and drama Chloe.

Critics and subscribers were delighted with her performance, making many warm to the real Princess Anne herself as the series came out.

A new generation will now be taking over the cast, with another actress stepping into Doherty’s shoes.

Actress Claudia Harrison is going to be playing Princess Anne in both The Crown seasons five and six.

While she will be starring in this hit series, Harrison is relatively unknown and the drama will be her biggest role to date by far.

The 46-year-old studied at Bradfield College, before graduating with an honors degree from Birmingham University.

She then went on to develop her acting skills at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts, London in 2000.

As The Crown is a worldwide phenomenon, it will be the star’s first big exposure to viewers in the USA.

It was first rumoured she was going to star in August 2021 when she was seen with actress Imelda Staunton on a boat in Scotland, wearing headscarves.

So it will be interesting to see how Harrison takes on the role in comparison to Doherty.

As mentioned, series five is going to focus on what happened throughout the 1990s.

For Princess Anne’s main storyline, it will see her first marriage to husband Mark Phillips break down.

But in the same year, she went on to meet and marry navy officer Timothy Laurence who she is still with to this day.

More is also expected to be seen from Anne’s children Zara and Peter Phillips in the upcoming episodes.

Season five is the beginning of the end for The Crown as there will just be one last series to air before it’s done and dusted with.

As of yet, there has been no talk of when series six could potentially be released on Netflix.

But going by previous start dates, it may not be out until the end of 2023.

The Crown season 5 premieres on Wednesday, November 9, on Netflix.
