Tokyo has been one on the main characters in the Netflix Spanish hit show Money Heist. She has been one of the few to stay on as part of the crew during the show’s transition from Spanish network television, where the show initially flopped, onto Netflix, where it became a global success. Since the beginning, Tokyo has been the character through which the audience became familiar with the world of the show since she is the one narrating the whole story.

Tokyo and Rio’s (played by Miguel Herrán) relationship started before the first heist even commenced, when the robbers were still planning it while staying at The Professor’s (Álvaro Morte) estate in Toledo.

Initially, they had to keep their relationship a secret, as it broke the professor’s code of conduct for the robbers.

That is also why all the robbers have names of cities, so if one is caught they know no real information about the other that they could let slip to the authorities.

However, the relationship between Tokyo and Rio quickly became a hindrance during the first heist at the Royal Mint as the two kept making impulsive decisions to protect one another.

As the robbers managed to escape the first heist with millions in cash, Tokyo and Rio decided to elope together to a remote island in the Caribbean.

But as Tokyo got bored of their reclusive life she headed to Panama City.

Rio thought he could survive without her but eventually gave in and called Tokyo, giving away their location to Interpol and he was arrested.

Over the years, the pair have grown a legion of fans, with the couple a favourite with viewers.

One of the reasons for this is the two have managed to survive so long against the odds, while many of their fellow robbers haven’t been this lucky.

After Rio was released by the Spanish authorities, he told Tokyo they couldn’t get back together and he has since focussed on his recovery from PTSD.

However, viewers have been keen to see the pair reunite as the show comes to an end.

Unfortunately, Corberó, doesn’t think this is possible due to how “toxic” Tokyo is.

She told Identity Mag: “I have been wondering about whether or not this relationship is toxic.

“With Rio’s vulnerability and Tokyo being very protective of him, we can see that from the very beginning.

“But perhaps it’s a bit toxic because of Tokyo’s personality.”

Looking to their future, she continued: “For their future, of course, I do know how it’s going to go from here.

“But I don’t want to give anything away. The audience will have to see for themselves.”

From what is known so far, Tokyo and Rio’s relationship could go wither way in season five.

It’s not unlike the show to pull off incredibly elaborate twists and keep viewers on their toes about the safety of their favourite characters.

Money Heists seasons 1-4 are available on Netflix.
