'Perry Mason': See First Teaser for HBO's Gritty Reboot Series

HBO has unveiled their first look at their gritty reboot of Perry Mason, starring The Americans’ Matthew Rhys in the title role of the famed criminal defense lawyer.

As opposed to author Erle Stanley Gardner’s original vision of the character — famously portrayed on television for decades by actor Raymond Burr — HBO’s upcoming series takes a more noir approach to focus on Mason’s origin story. Radiohead’s “Life in a Glasshouse” soundtracks Perry Mason’s minute-long teaser, which transports the story to Los Angeles, 1931, when Mason was still a P.I.

“While the rest of the country struggles through the Great Depression, this city is booming! Oil! Olympic Games! Talking Pictures! Evangelical Fervor! And a child kidnapping gone very, very wrong,” HBO said of the series, premiering June 21st. “Based on characters created by author Erle Stanley Gardner, this drama series follows the origins of American fiction’s most legendary criminal defense lawyer, Perry Mason. When the case of the decade breaks down his door, Mason’s relentless pursuit of the truth reveals a fractured city and just maybe, a pathway to redemption for himself.”

John Lithgow, Tatiana Maslany, Shea Whigham, Stephen Root and Robert Patrick co-star in Perry Mason, co-produced by Robert Downey Jr.; that actor originally intended on portraying Mason in a reboot penned by True Detective’s Nic Pizzolatto, who ultimately left the series.
