Season four of the fan favourite teen series may have been cut short amid coronavirus lockdown restrictions, but there is still plenty of behind-the-scenes drama for Riverdale fans to keep up with.
Despite the premature season finale cementing Bughead as Riverdale High’s cutest couple for the foreseeable future, sources close to PEOPLE have reported co-stars Cole Sprouse and Lili Reinhart have recently split.
Reps for both Sprouse and Reinhart have yet to comment, though the source confirmed that the Riverdale star’s real life relationship tends to be on and off and they have currently broken up.
Speculation of their break up was also spurred by Jughead Jones star Cole Sprouse, 27, when he posted an open letter on his Instagram profile regarding negative comments.

In his Instagram stories he wrote: “I tolerate a lot of rumours and slander from people online claiming to be my fans. Fans who feel entitled to my privacy precisely because I never indulge them.
“But attacking my friends, baseless accusations, leaking my address and sending death threats are all qualities of insanity and fanaticism.”
Although the young star didn’t confirm what he was referring to, many of his followers speculated his relationship with Lili Reinhart, 23, was currently on hold.
The Riverdale co-stars’ relationship has remained in the public eye since romance was first sparked in 2017, following the release of Riverdale’s first season.
Cole and Lili previously split last summer, however the Riverdale stars later mocked media coverage of their break up and insisted on social media they were still together.
At the time, an insider told PEOPLE: “Their personalities are very different and their lifestyles often clashed”, and added the Riverdale stars were “trying to be as amicable and friendly as possible.”
Following Cole Sprouse’s comments on Instagram, Lili Reinhart also posted similarly heated comments on her own page, speaking out against ‘toxic’ members of Riverdale’s fan community.
She said: “Dear everyone on social media, don’t put down people for the sake of putting them down. Don’t be a f****** a**hole. The world doesn’t need anymore of that s***.”

The stars’ comments follow Cole and Lili’s trend of remaining private about their personal life, although they have appeared romantic together in public at events such as the 2018 MET Gala.
Lili Reinhart told Teen Vogue in 2018: “It’s not like I’m trying to dangle my relationship in front of people’s faces like, ‘You don’t know anything about us.’
“It’s just, you don’t need to know. People feel like they’re owed that, and you’re absolutely not owed anything by me.”
Rumours of their break up have also prompted speculation for how their characters on-screen relationship will be portrayed on Riverdale going forward.

Although Bughead remained an item at the end of season four, Riverdale’s romantic subplots have become messy in recent episodes after Archie Andrews (K.J. Apa) confessed his feelings and stole a kiss from childhood crush Betty.
Now, with Archie and Veronica’s (Camila Mendes) relationship in jeopardy, season five is speculated to feature more lurid affairs and potential break-ups.
No release date for Riverdale’s continuation is confirmed after the coronavirus hiatus, but The CW has confirmed the remaining three episodes will be rolled over to the start of season five.
Riverdale season 4 is currently available on Netflix.
