It’s ironic how Spider-Man — the most famous Marvel superhero — and his associated characters remain the only ones not owned by Marvel itself. At least Disney and Spider-Man rights holder Sony struck a deal to keep the webhead in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) a bit longer. Recent news indicates the MCU is making the most of the time it has with Spider-Man.
The MCU has already introduced a lot of ‘Spider-Man’ villains
Spider-Man: Far From Home ended with the twist of Peter Parker’s (Tom Holland) identity going public. So it stands to reason that Spidey’s enemies could be gunning for him pretty hard. Indeed, the MCU has introduced far more villains than it might seem. So, if the MCU’s Spider-Man 3 — not to be confused with Sony’s 2007 movie — goes that route, there’s a lot of potential.
Michael Keaton’s Vulture and Jake Gyllenhaal’s Mysterio both offered exciting takes on classic members of his rogues gallery. But the MCU has also teased several future supervillains who could rise up in Spider-Man 3. Will Michael Mando’s Scorpion, Bokeem Woodbine’s Shocker, or Numan Acar’s Chameleon emerge fully-formed? It’s very possible.
But Jamie Foxx’s return opens the door for other familiar faces
If Spider-Man 3 brings any new villains, fans have long clamored for Kraven the Hunter to be the next in line. After all, he is perhaps the most notable Spider-Man nemesis to never appear in a live-action movie. The last thing fans expected was Jamie Foxx to return as Electro in Spider-Man 3. However, according to The Hollywood Reporter, that’s the case.
Assuming Foxx’s casting opens the doors for the multiverse, then the MCU could really mine Spider-Man’s movie history. Holland might even join forces with Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield. But beyond that, such memorable villains as Willem Dafoe’s Green Goblin, Alfred Molina’s Doctor Octopus, and Thomas Haden Church’s Sandman could all join the fun too.
Still fans shouldn’t count on every villain staging an MCU comeback
Dafoe and Molina are particularly beloved by fans of the friendly neighborhood webslinger. But technically, even Rhys Ifans’ Lizard and Felicity Jones’ Felicia Hardy aka Blackcat could make an appearance. Still, Marvel will likely be more strategic with who it brings to the MCU.
So fans shouldn’t expect less well-received portrayals such as Topher Grace’s Venom and Paul Giamatti’s Rhino to take part in Spider-Man 3. After all, Tom Hardy already has Venom covered for the foreseeable future. But the possibilities of what Spider-Man 3 could bring are intriguing.
