Strictly lining up iconic 80s singer for new series after trying for years

Shakin’ Stevens is being lined up for this year’s Strictly Come Dancing.

The 75-year-old pop veteran, aka Mike Barratt –- famous for his hits This Ole House and Merry Christmas Everyone – has been one of the top targets for the 2023 series of the BBC ballroom series for years.

Bosses are hopeful they can get finally get the Welshman on the dancefloor this year, as he has returned to the charts with Re-set, his first new album for seven years.

A well-placed source said: “Bosses have spent years trying to get national Shakey on the show and are hopeful that he’ll finally say yes.

“Shakey is a consider a national treasure thanks to that big Christmas hit and is certain to be popular with viewers.

“Bosses are hoping he can be the older contestant who surprises everyone. His hip shaking on the Top of the Pops is legendary!”

Shakey was one of the most famous pop stars on the 1980s and became a household name thanks to his Elvis-inspired look and songs inspired by the classic rock ’n’ roll era.

He has three children and five grandchildren, and lives with his wife Sue in Marlow, Bucks.

He recently said about getting match fit again and kicking booze and fags after a cardiac arrest: “I had a heart attack in July 2010. I’d been picking up bags of stones, and I knew something was wrong.

“I fell asleep and didn’t wake up. Luckily my wife Sue gave me CPR and called the ambulance.

“It was a huge wake-up call: I gave up smoking and drinking, and I started looking into my family history, which I knew nothing about. What I discovered was shocking.”

Contestants rumoured to be taking part in this year’s Strictly include telly presenter Sophie Morgan, 38, who would be the first wheelchair-user to take part in the show.

Downton Abbey’s Amy Nuttall, 40, Emma and Matt Willis, 47 and 40, Gino D’Acampo, 46, Peter Crouch, 42, and Steph McGovern, 40, are also said to be in the frame for the latest series, set to kick off in September.
