Virgin River season three will be airing on Netflix on July 9, and it is expected to be the most dramatic season yet. Fans should finally discover what happened to Jack Sheridan (played by Martin Henderson) after he was shot. It has been suggested that his storylines will take precedent, which may mean Mel Monroe (Alexandra Breckenridge) may be absent in the future.
Will Mel Monroe be missing from some of the episodes?
Fans have been on the edge of their seats awaiting the next instalment of the uplifting series, Virgin River.
The show is based on a series of novels by Robyn Carr, and it follows the lives of residents in the picturesque town.
Nurse Mel moved to Virgin River following the tragic death of her husband, and she wanted a fresh start.
She ended up falling for bar owner Jack, and their relationship had fully developed by the end of season two.
But in a shocking twist of events, Jack was shot by an anonymous killer at his bar, and Mel discovered him collapsed on the floor.
The trailer for season three reveals that Jack has made a full recovery, but he has other things on his mind.
Fans are still waiting to find out if he is the real father of his ex-girlfriend Charmaine’s (Lauren Hammersley) children.
He is also expected to clash with Mel over the prospect of her having a baby with him.
Besides this, his sister Brie (Zibby Allen) will be arriving in town and she is likely to play a recurring role.
With this in mind, fans believe Mel may take a back seat at some stage, and they took to Reddit to discuss.
One fan said: “Apparently there are rumours about Alexandra not being the whole next season.
“Has anyone heard about it? Apparently, her character arc is complete, according to the books, which if you’ve read the books doesn’t make any sense but still…”
Other viewers have agreed season three may focus on Jack and the challenges he is facing.
One said: “Yeah I think it’s moving to Jack now. I mean it would only make sense to focus on Jack now since we had key moments but never really got into it.
“I think of course they will continue to add new characters from the other books just to keep the show going. But let’s be real we all watch bc of Jack and Mel.” [Sic]
However, the IMDb page for the show says that actress Breckenridge is credited in 30 episodes of the show.
Each season consists of 10 episodes, so this should mean she will be featuring in the whole third season.
Another fan said: “To say that the main characters will take a back seat when clearly they’re THE show, it’s just crazy to me.
“The worse part is that such a rumour hasn’t been mentioned by the showrunner ever, on the contrary, she has always said that the characters will end up like in the books, eventually.”
Another fan added: “I hadn’t heard this, and I’m not sure I believe it. Do you mean this coming season or in a potential season 4?
“Regardless, she with Martin are the main characters, she must be fully contracted to appear for all 10 episodes a season. I’d be amazed if this was true!”
The fan who shared the original rumour said they had been referring to the fourth season.
They said: “I mean season 4. Production Weekly confirmed that they start shooting in July.”
With this in mind, Mel should still feature in all 10 episodes of season three, but she may appear less frequently in future seasons.
Some fans believe season three will touch more on Mel’s past, including her relationship with her late husband, Mark (Daniel Gillies).
Speaking about what they would like to see happen in future episodes, one fan said: “I love Jack and Mel but it could be fun to see other couples from the books if the show chose to not always focus on them.
“Mostly it would just depend on how well they cast the other couples and their chemistry.
“Introducing the Riordan brothers would keep the show going for at least 5 more seasons lol.” [Sic]
Some viewers believe Mel will get pregnant in season three, as she does in the original source material.
With this in mind, she may stay out of the spotlight in future seasons once she has given birth, but nothing has been confirmed.
Virgin River season 3 arrives on Netflix on July 9.
