Amid a bombshell report by The Post that Hunter Biden introduced his dad to an executive at Ukraine’s Burisma energy company less than a year before then-Vice President Joe Biden pressured government officials in Ukraine into firing a prosecutor investigating that company, Team Biden called a “lid” for reporters before 10 am.
“The Biden campaign has called a lid for in-person events,” wrote Biden press pool reporter Sabrina Siddiqui of the Wall Street Journal, indicating that the candidate would not be making any public appearances or fielding questions Wednesday.
The Democratic presidential candidate — huddled in his Wilmington, Del., home — has not directly responded to The Post’s reporting, including on a document that appears to debunk his prior claim he had “never spoken” with his son about his “overseas business dealing,” including a reported $83,000 monthly job on the board of Burisma.
An email from the hard drive, acquired by a Delaware computer repairman, appears to indicate Biden met in 2015 with Burisma board adviser Vadym Pozharskyi while the firm employed his son. Then-Vice President Biden led the Obama administration’s Ukraine policy.
The Trump campaign attacked Biden for calling a “lid” as the story broke.
“On the morning of the explosive reporting in the New York Post that Joe Biden lied to the American people about never discussing his son Hunter’s foreign business deals, Biden’s campaign immediately announced that the former vice president would be making no public appearances. The Biden campaign “called a lid” for the day at 9:41 a.m.,” the Trump campaign said in an email blast.
The Trump campaign summarized The Post’s reporting and noted, “Less than a year after Joe Biden met with Pozharskyi and Hunter Biden, then-Vice President Biden pressured Ukrainian officials into firing the prosecutor who was investigating Burisma.” That investigation reportedly was dormant.
House Democrats impeached President Trump in December for asking Ukraine to investigate Hunter Biden’s employment. Senate Republicans acquitted Trump in February of charges he abused his power and obstructed a congressional investigation.
The Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee is working with the Delaware computer repairman, whose identity was confirmed by The Post, to verify the documents on the hard drive.
Although Biden won’t be interacting in-person with reporters, he is expected to join a virtual fundraiser later Wednesday and he will give pre-taped remarks at 7 p.m. to a “Muslims Making Change” event.
Trump routinely roasts Biden for his early-morning “lids” in what typically is a frenzied pre-election campaign season.
“If he wins, I’m gonna be very embarrassed. I’ll say, ‘Gee, I worked so hard and he didn’t work at all,’” Trump said last month at a Virginia rally.
