The donation from the financial services company — which employs 7,000 people — brings our current total to more than £750,000.

Legal and General’s corporate affairs director John Godfrey said: “The Sun’s Who Cares Wins Appeal is terrific because not only is it getting money to the people working on the front line, it is doing so quickly and providing an immediate response.

“Everyone at L&G knows people working for the NHS.

“It requires a huge amount of fortitude — knowing this horrible virus is doing the rounds — to go to work and put your life on the line.

“It shows the huge amount of commitment, compassion and care they have for us all.

“We are very lucky to have our NHS.”

The Sun has joined with NHS Charities Together in its Covid-19 Appeal to make sure your money gets to the health workers who need it.

NHS Charities Together is the official umbrella organisation for NHS charities.

It supports 240 health service charities around the UK.

As well as supporting our appeal, Legal and General is also offering up unoccupied built-to-rent properties to NHS key workers.

And it has donated personal protective equipment from its factory in Selby, North Yorks, where it builds modular homes.

Through Bruntwood SciTech, Legal and General co-owns the UK’s largest science and tech property in Alderley Edge, Cheshire, and this is now being used as a mega-lab for coronavirus testing.

The firm also announced a £20million partnership with the University of Edinburgh to establish the Advanced Care Research Centre to revolutionise care in later life.

“The Covid-19 crisis has highlighted how it is more important than ever to have a long-term and well thought through strategy.”

Join our George Cross campaign for NHS staff

We are urging Sun readers to sign a petition calling for our NHS staff to be awarded the George Cross.

We are backing a proposal by Lord Ashcroft to honour our health heroes with the gallantry gong given for acts of bravery that did not take place in battle.

A No10 spokesman said: “The NHS is doing a fantastic job and the nation will want to find a way to say thank you when we have defeated this virus.”

SAS hero Andy McNab added: “The award of a George Cross would show an emotional appreciation.”

We are asking our readers to please sign the petition below.
