Obama branded an 'ego maniac' & 'narcissist' after audiobook edition for his new memoir goes on for 29 hours

BARACK Obama has been branded a "narcissist" and an "ego maniac" after he recorded an audiobook edition of his memoir stretching over 29 hours.

The 44th US President's autobiography A Promised Land was published on Tuesday and has already sold more than a million copies.

But some readers were aghast when they discovered how long it would take to listen to him reading the unedited 768-page book.

Comedian Adam Carolla, appearing on Tucker Carlson's Fox News show, joked: "Obama is a bigger narcissist than Trump.

"I was only able to listen to the first 17 hours on the toilet this morning."

Carlson chimed in: "Two autobiographies before you're 60? It's safe to say he doesn't have a self-esteem problem."

ABC host Meghan McCain's husband Ben Domenech tweeted: "I realize 29 hours of Barack Obama talking about himself may seem like a problem, but don't worry, it's just Volume 1."

Others on Twitter mocked the author as an "ego maniac" and a "legend in his own mind".

But one Obama fan called the audiobook "29 hours of pure bliss".

Another happy listener said: "It's 29 hours of that voice, you guys. TWENTY-NINE HOURS. Whatever is ailing me will surely be cured by the end."

A Promised Land is volume one of Obama's mammoth autobiography, covering his early life and his first two-and-a-half years in the White House up to the killing of Osama bin Laden.

It covers some of the same period as a previous million-selling memoir, Dreams From My Father published in 1995.

Obama, 59, has admitted the new work took him longer to write than he expected, saying “the book kept growing in length and scope” as he found he needed more words than expected to capture a given moment.

Despite the length and $45 price tag, it smashed sales records with 887,000 copies, ebooks and audiobooks sold in the US and Canada in the first 24 hours.

Only the final Harry Potter book has sold more copies on the first day.

Publishers Penguin Random House paid a reported $65million for memoirs by Barack and Michelle Obama.

Michelle's book Becoming sold 725,000 copies on the first day and has topped 10 million worldwide since its release in 2018.

A Promised Land reveals how VP Joe Biden warned against raiding Bin Laden's compound because he was worried about the mission failing.

It also reveals Obama's team called Hillary Clinton a "f***ing vampire you can't kill off" and how she was snubbed for the job of vice president.

Obama also recounts his first meeting with Vladimir Putin, who launched into a "seemingly endless" 45-minute rant against America.
